Program Description

In this camp, students will learn how to apply human biology, chemistry, and physics/engineering concepts through hands-on experiments! They will be guided through science labs and experiments that they will conduct individually and in groups, which include but are not limited to building a helping hand model, calorimeters, hydraulic claws, rockets, and dissecting frogs. The goal of this class is to challenge yourself to learn new concepts and to understand how we can apply STEM concepts to our everyday lives.

This course is well suited for students who are interested in learning various STEM topics that will prepare them for high school science courses. This is a great learning opportunity for those who prefer to learn hands-on. We will be learning how scientists have studied human anatomy and biology to create human-like hands used as artificial prosthetics by creating a helping hand model. Biomedical Engineering and Design will be applied not only through building our own helping hand, but also through building rockets and hydraulic claws. We will also be dissecting a frog to familiarize ourselves with internal anatomy. In addition, we will be learning about thermochemistry and calorimetry by making our own calorimeters to measure chemical energy/calories in food, just as a chemist would do! This will be a challenging, yet fun course, and would be great for students in junior high to help prepare them for high school.

Location: UC Irvine, 92697. The exact location and drop-off details will be provided after registration.

Materials: Students will be required to bring a laptop, binder, and pencils. A backpack is also recommended to hold water and other personal belongings. All project and activity resources will be provided.
